You're welcome Manal! Glad it's useful to you.

I hope it works out well with the townhouse manager. My guess is that the only concern they might have is odor. Mine rarely smells bad; it's only funky if I have too much grass in too thick of a layer. I'm interested in finding out what happens!

Thanks Leah for this useful post.

I haven't tried composting before. Because I live in a townhouse complex, I would need to check with the Strata manager to see if I can composting in my backyard.

I like your idea of having two areas. It ensures you give it time to settle.

LOL Katie, I think sending the scraps counts because it sounds like your city is composting them, and then other people use the compost. So that's a good thing.

Consider having just a loose pile where you dump your scraps and leave 'em--no fuss, no worry, no turning, no layers--even if it's years before you get to it, you'll have that compost waiting for you! I can't guarantee I'll have mine spread around any time soon lol But it's there when I'm ready.

Leah, I have to admit that I'm a lazy gardener. In fact, I'm thinking of approaching Alison to write a guest post called "The Hopeless Gardener". I don't have a compost heap, but should. I've got one of those black plastic compost thingies sitting empty in my jungle of a garden. Does that count? Nope. I send all my kitchen scraps to my city's green bin program. Does that count? I fear not. I shall study your tips and dream of the day when I will become a less-than-hopeless-gardener. Cheers.

Thanks, Jean! As long as it turns out nice--that's the goal. Best "compost" I ever had was a 30+ year-old collection of leaves, behind an old shed, happening naturally long before I moved to that house (huge trees overhead). That was 10 inches deep, at least, and never turned, I'm sure. Nature does its work :)

You just made me feel so much better for not turning over my compost pile :) I add layers, and I do end up with nice, rich compost. Still, I always thought I was doing this 'wrong' because I didn't turn things over. Excellent article, Leah, and not just because you made me feel better :)
