Carole Brown at Ecosystem Gardening has blessed me with the Honest Scrap Award. Just like Carole, I don’t usually do these kinds of things, but Carole is a good friend and a good sport, so I reckon I should play along with the fun. Here is Carole’s post and mine is below. Are you next?
To accept this award, I have to share 10 honest things about myself that you wouldn’t know from reading this site. And I have to tag 7 other bloggers to participate – I’m putting my thinking cap on and you’re probably on the list!
Here’s the list – 10 Honest Things About Me
- I was a very shy teen and was bullied at school. Sad, but true. I’m a whole lot more social now.
- I once worked as a Youth Hostel Warden – great summer job with lots of #playoutdoors time. My dog and I were free rangers roaming the Scottish mountains almost every day.
- I used to be a COBOL programmer for a Scotch Whisky company, after I graduated first in Biology and then as a dietitian. Go figure! I like the challenge of learning something new and Scottish college education was free – I even received a living allowance.
- I’m a Firefox tab hoarder – I frequently do destruction testing on Firefox because of the number of tabs I have open. They should employ me to test Firefox limits.
- Yes, I like chocolate. But if you offered me potato chips instead, or a bowl of homemade soup and fresh-baked bread, I’d be in a dilemma. I’d probably have to go for the soup.
- I have a guilty laundry secret. Since August of 2008 I’ve been trying to air dry my laundry but, despite having a wonderful, custom-built, ceiling mounted drier, at least half my laundry still goes in the tumble drier. My goal though is to double the number of laundry loads that are air dried every year until it’s 100%. I think so far I’m on track.
- I’ve been happily married for 20 years. Our secret is communication, tolerance, pursuing your partner’s dream, and not expecting perfection.
- Organization and me are like oil and water. We don’t mix. But I live in hope that some day the emulsifier will be found. Meantime, see 7.
- I’m wishing this was no. 10 in the list!
- I have some really wonderful friends both locally and online. Every day they bring me blessings and remind me not to take myself too seriously, to enjoy the wonders that life brings, and to get outside.
Seven wonderful writer’s whom I’m passing the Honest Scrap award to:
- Backyard Mama, Shannon Baer, @backyardmama. Shannon is a wonderful early childhood educator and her writing gets me back to life’s importantces (yeah, I made that word up – it should be a word).
- Karen Wilde, otherwise know as @Wildelycreative who writes at The Cloud Factory, but is known to me through Twitter. Karen lives in the UK and recently visited my native Scotland on the trail of the re-introduced beavers. Take a look at her wonderful photos.
- Ali Thinks who is my secret namesake (yes, we share a name, which is just a little weird). She’s better looking than me and more gutsy, but I forgive her because we both wear glasses, love books and can’t help but write.
- Janet at the 32-akre wood. Janet is funny, a great visitor to many, many blogs, and she has taught me about living in the midst of coal country where mountain-top removal is at the end of your drive-way. Janet also loves puppies – she just can’t resist them when they land at the end of her driveway. Yeah, not too far from that flat mountain-top.
- Kari Svenneby, @activekidsclub, founder of Active Kids Club. We are both imports to North America from Europe, but Kari is smarter than me because she speaks 4+ languages. We share a passion for nature and the outdoors.
- Warren Buss, otherwise known as @KSUPurple. I don’t get why he’s fascinated by sports, but he’s always up for a great Twitter conversation and he shows Kansas in all it’s beauty at his blog called, imaginatively, Warren’s blog. Simplicity can be a good thing!
- Roy Scribner, @campingblogger who writes at Camping Blogger. I’ve been enjoying visiting Roy’s blog and dreaming of National Forests and states which have tons of public land and rushing white-water rivers. Don’t worry though Kansas, I’m not leaving you!
And now, if you need a chocolate fix without the guilt try specialty chocolate with organic and vegan choices. What could be better for Valentine’s Day?

Great list, Alison! Thanks for being willing to play along. I struggle with #8 also, but am getting better. You’ve given me some great new reading material with your tagged bloggers. Off to check them out now.
Carole´s last blog ..The Honest Scrap–To Do or Not To Do
Thank you! I’ll have to think of 10 things that no one knows yet. I’m pretty talkative on this blog, you know!
What a great idea! Seems like a good exercise indeed. I would love to do that too once I find the right time and space. Thank you for sharing Alison!
I always knew you were interesting but… WOW! I’m sorry you were bullied by mean kids. But you showed them. You’re a kind, smart, successful social butterfly!
You are amazing! Really! I love your marriage advice and I agree wholeheartedly. You are obviously a whole lot more tech-savvy than I am. A WHOLE lot. I’m learning. Wonderful to get to know you better Alison (and I love your blog)!
Great list, Alison. By the time I get around to doing mine, there won’t be any bloggers left to tag!
Now I’m quite embarrassed by the lovely comments. It goes to prove that what I said is true, “I have some really wonderful friends.” And this is not a full list by any stretch of the imagination.
If one of you wants to tag Aviad, I think he’d love to take part. I met him over at AltGlobe.com and I’d enjoy hearing more of his story.
Alison, thank you for the kind words! I’m looking forward to writing my list this weekend and I might just add a small twist to the Honest Scrap template…
Roy Scribner´s last blog ..2010 Mountain Hardwear Family Camping Tents
Aww, thanks for the kind mention, namesake! I’m sorry it took me a day to notice…I wasn’t on Twitter yesterday.
Aww, thanks for the mention, namesake!
D’oh. I hate when that happens.
I’m experiencing namesake spam!!! Well, thanks for the comment/s Alison. I could delete comments 2 and 3 as you suggested, but it’s more fun to leave them — I’m hoping it makes me look just a little smarter than you. Just as long as it doesn’t show my nasty little sense of humor streak… that ought to remain a secret.
Very cool list Alison!
#2 must have been an amazing experience and would never have guessed on #3. Thanks for sharing these – have a great weekend!
Tara´s last blog ..Drinking Your Way to a Better Environment
Thank you! I am exctied to do this and just totally missed it till today… so now I sit to ponder… hum what don’t all you know about me?
Shannon ´s last blog ..Self-control, self-regulation and play
Great post, Alison. I did one of these awards back in Oct 2009 http://gardeningfornature.blogspot.com/2009/10/honest-scrap-award-mother-nature.html but I was too shy to say things about myself, so picked Mother Nature instead. It is so eerie how many of your things are the same as mine in real life. Numbers 1, 3 (C++ instead of Cobol, but very techy just the same),5 and 7 are identical. And, of course 10 is a given. Thanks for sharing so I know you better.
Kathy Green´s last blog ..Frosting the Garden
Tara, yes, I loved living amongst the mountains. The air was so incredibly fresh there and the scenery and exercise were wonderful. Somehow I was a little homesick, but I think I could have got over that!
Shannon, thanks for taking part. I enjoyed reading your Honest Scrap too.
Kathy, that is just a little eerie. I guess great minds think alike! Thanks for sharing here. Now I want to come up and visit Colorado and eat soup and bread (and chips) with my new-found think-alike. I wonder what flavor you like…
