Stop and think about it for a minute. Trees are amazing, incredible, highly useful, and we need them.
Trees in our nature gardens, woodlands, and our forests produce oxygen, provide shade and shelter, absorb CO2, nurture insects to feed the birds we enjoy, provide seeds, nuts and fruits for us and other animals, grow into the wood we need for building, and regulate rainfall and run-off.
Let’s celebrate trees; trees green our Earth. Here’s a little video for you to enjoy, courtesy of the Discovery Channel.
What do you say? Have you ever planted a tree? What functions are trees performing in your garden, neighborhood and community? If you know of any great articles about trees (yours or others) leave a link.

Great video. I liked the explanation of how useful fallen trees are as well– maybe that will help inspire some people to have a more natural landscape in their own backyards.
When I was 8 I planted two pine trees in our yard. It was a girl scout project I think. They grew quite well. Ten years later, we had a tornado in Nashville (highly unusual). Seven of our big trees were uprooted. My pine tree was underneath one of those trees and didn’t survive. About 5 years after that a drunk lady went tearing down our road, jumped our ditch, and plowed through our yard and 3 of the neighbors’, taking several trees with her, including my pine tree.

That didn’t stop me though. We plant one or two trees every year, even though we live in the middle of a forest.

Why Alison, You are the Lorax! Thanks for sharing this great video. As much as I hate my neighbors invasive Norway Maples, we have Flickers, Downy, Hairy, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers nesting in them every year. It’s so exciting to watch them excavate the nest hole and then bringing in food all day long, but the best is the day the babies take their first flight. Amazing every time!
Trees are probably my favorite part of nature, though I’ve never planted one myself. I am partial to the Redwoods I grew up seeing in the Mariposa Grove in Yosemite. I find such strength & beauty & constancy in them … thanks for reminding me! Great video! Love that trees serve a purpose even in death!

I’m still amazed, every time I venture into one of our coastal redwood forests here in northern California. The amount of damage these trees can sustain, new life springing up and out of dead trees and just the diverse ecosystem that thrives underneath these huge canopies, is awe-inspiring.
