While many spend their hard-earned cash on Black Friday by lining up for stuff on sale, and others are set to protest consumerism with Buy Nothing Day, I plan to shop for some ducks and support sustainable agriculture.
Why Ducks?
I’m thankful for the life I have with what I already own and my friends and family are not short of food, clean water, or shelter. We all know that there are others less well off than us.
For some people a few ducks can make all the difference. Ducks are wonderful assets in sustainable agriculture – they eat pests in fields, manure crops, and increase crop productivity. I can help a family by funding a flock of ducks for just $20.
Don’t Want Ducks?
A heifer, some chickens, a goat, a llama, a pig, or a sheep can make all the difference to a family in another part of the world. Through Heifer International you can choose to give a larger animal, a share in a larger animal, a whole flock chickens, a trio of rabbits, or the gift of hope.
If you prefer not to give animals give the gift of trees or honeybees.
I hope you will consider someone on your list this year for a gift of generosity and giving, rather than socks or a tie, perfumed soap in plastic or something they don’t really need. Who on your list would enjoy the gift of ducks?

I love ducks! I wish we could have docs on our property, unfortunately the coyotes would be more than happy to see a few ducks around.
