How to Attract Birds by Mimicking Their Calls

attract birds by mimicking callsSome people know how to attract wild birds by mimicking their calls, and I’m not talking here about using the type of goose call or duck call hunters use.

If you’ve ever wondered how to attract wild birds using calls, The Art of Pishing by Pete Dunne, not to be confused with the similar sounding phishing, might be the book for you. And, no, that’s not a rude word, but you’ll have to read the book, or look inside at Amazon.com, to find out why.

Calling Birds in Your Nature Garden

When out in your nature garden or your favorite birdwatching spot how cool would it be to call birds to you? One of my favorite things about nature gardening is watching and listening to the birds. I’ve always wanted to have a wild bird eat out of my hand.

Now I’m wondering how hard this skill of pishing is to learn. Encouragingly, 7 of 10 reviewers at Amazon.com gave this book 5 stars.

Well, this book by Pete Dunne is going on my wishlist. What about yours?

  • Pishing is a technique used by birders to get birds to come a little closer so the birders can more clearly observe them. Basically, it’s a series of chirping, clucking, or “kissing” noises. The good thing is, this book comes with a CD to demonstrate these terms which is much easier than trying to imagine them in writing. Very good book.

  • Wow, if I had this book with CD my girls would be in heaven! They love trying to call the birds and squirrels. I think they’ve watched one too many Disney movie because they also think they can hold out their fingers and a bird will sit on it and sing with them (and then maybe the birds can help me with the laundry)! Wonderful review, Alison. Thank you!

Wendy, I sure could use help with the laundry. Your story really made me smile :-) Unfortunately the kind of “help” birds might actually be with the laundry isn’t so attractive – with all the trees in my yard I wonder how long it would stay clean if hung out!
