Favorite Backyard Animal Nominations

Bugs Logo ExampleWhat is the favorite backyard animal, the animal most people would love to have in a backyard wildlife, and nature, garden?

This is your chance to nominate your favorite mammal, bird, amphibian, reptile or bug.

I’m excited to announce that I will soon have a new logo here at Loving Nature’s Garden, courtesy of the artist who designed the logo you see on the right.

But which animal or animals should be included in my new logo? Let’s have a Favorite Backyard Animal Contest.

Leave me a comment with your backyard animal nomination and on Wednesday I’ll set up the voting. Be sure to come back and vote. I’ll be tweeting about it. I wonder which animal will win.

I’ll start this off with a nomination from my kids who suggested Fox. Wouldn’t a fox be a cool critter to have in your nature garden?

  • I will nominate the chickadee not so much because everyone would love to have them in their yard but because so many people DO have them in their yard. They are boisterous, cute, and always seem happy. And they are easy to attract to a yard, often being the first bird to show up after putting out birdfeeders.
You never tire of chickadees and they always put a smile on your face! Go you fightin’ chickadees!

@nativegardener has nominated Squirrel – cute, playful & fun to watch.

@duncraft has nominated Chipmunk–even the name is cute!

I would like to nominate the otters that come to our backyard off the lake. It is a real treat to see them frolicking on the shore. We see them only from time to time, but wish they would come more often.

Carolina Wrens. They are very busy, nosy birds who do their own thing regardless of what is going on about them. They make me laugh out loud.

@backyardhabitat has nominated bunny, or rabbit, because she had a really cute one who lived in her backyard habitat for one year.

  • Hummingbirds. Or maybe toads. I think toads are under-appreciated, but serve such a beneficial purpose in any garden that we should appreciate them more!

  • My dad & I nursed a baby crow back from a fall from its nest when I was a kid. Then we set him free. So I gotta vote for crows. They’re underappreciated!

  • I nominate the little brown bat! They eat mosquitoes and other insects that bug people back inside :)

I’m nominating the Eastern Grey Squirrel. Actually, we have lots of the black variety here in Mississauga, Ontario. They’re fun to watch, especially when they’re playing. In winter, I put out nuts along with bird seed and watch them stuff their faces. It’s a zoo out back.

I’m loving all the nominations. @MommyMellie has added quail to the list :-)

  • A few decades ago I had an albino squirrel who preferred my backyard. Wish another would come around.

  • Oooooh, all of these are so good! Well, seeing that my fave, the SQUIRREL, is taken (and the mighty hummingbird, too!), I nominate the Eastern Box Turtle. They used to get in the strawberries in the garden & my mama got so mad, but it always made me happy. I used to draw turtles eating strawberries and hang the pictures on the fridge. :-) Bethe @balmeras

LOL Bethe – I love the mind-picture of you drawing turtles eating strawberries to hang on the fridge! Thanks for the nomination.

Another nomination – @glueandglitter has nominated the guinea hen

  • My vote would’ve gone to squirrels, chipmunks or hummingbirds… OH how about ladybugs! The garden’s best friend!

@JormaJyrkkanen: “I like Magpies and Robins and Crickets and Frogs for favorite backyard animals. Mule deer love my garden.” I’m going to take your first animal, the magpie, as a nomination.

  • I nominate porcupine… why? I picked it out of my Animal Medicine Cards with an intention for your site and the little poem about the porcupine goes:
    Porcupine… remind me,
    Of innocence again,
    With every man a brother,
each woman a friend. – Jamie Sams and David Carson

Great way for us to approach outside learning with this childlike innocence!

Great idea and can’t wait to see what you choose! Good luck!

  • Oooh, I love this game! My vote is the Screech Owl. I love standing on my deck at night and listening to them call back and forth to each other. It’s a very good way to end the day.

  • Oh Alison, this so difficult to choose a favorite. We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful critters visit our yard -countless insects, birds, squirrels, deer even a black bear.
I suppose it would have to be Butterflies, they have been such an inspiration, creatively and spiritually. Not only are they incredibly beautiful, they love nectar and are very important pollinators in our ecosystem.

  • I like worms — just plain, garden variety Earthworms (even if they aren’t native). If you have Earthworms, everything else will follow!

  • Alison Kerr

@landisj has nominated – The Monarch – the caterpillars are fascinating and the butterflies lovely. Of course nothing beats the industrious lady beetle.

  • A beneficial insect of any sort would be a fine addition! Bumblebee, dragonfly, mantid (praying mantis), butterfly … I’m also fond of American goldfinches (love to watch them feast on flower seed heads). Happy day!
