I’ve got too much stuff. I’ve got art stuff I’m not using. I’ve got shelves of science stuff. I’ve got a bunch of stuff for sewing and knitting. Maybe I’ve even got some books I could do without.
I’m at a loss to understand where all this stuff came from. Maybe it is the stuff of unfulfilled dreams – I thought I could be an artist, knit great creations, and happily occupy my family with fun science projects. The truth is, I’d rather be writing and our learning needs have moved on.
I seem to have reached some kind of limit. Lately I’ve been refusing to buy anything much more. I may have bought a book here or there, maybe 3 this year. If I’m not using the stuff I have, how could I justify the impact of getting more? After all in Reduce, Reuse, Recycle it’s the Reduce which comes first.
The question is, what to do with all this stuff I’m not using. I mean, much of it I might want again someday, but other stuff I know I really won’t. What do you do? Have you got any tips? Have you ever sold stuff and managed to get something else you really wanted or needed?

I never have the patience for yard/garage sales so I usually donate the majority of items that I have. If I have items that are bigger ticket items, I’ll sell them. I’m in a reduce stage now and have years of kids clothes to donate, I’m just trying to find the right place.
Good for you Melissa for being in a “reduce” stage. I do usually give a good amount of stuff to charity every year. Things like kids clothes go out as soon as we’re done with them.
It’s the books, craft and learning stuff that’s causing me a problem. Stuff that could be useful again. Most of it probably isn’t worth much either.
Got a suggestion? How do you de-clutter?
I have the same problem as you, I have all this stuff that accumulates. Thank you for the “Reduce” reminder–I think I do fairly well with the “Reuse and Recycle” portion of the three R’s, but the first one? Not a chance. I guess I gotta work on that one!
I’ve got that homeschooler “everything is a learning tool” bug and it’s hard to let go of the things that I think could be useful in the future, especially with more than one child in the home. Gotta nip that one a bit, I think.
