What’s happening? Here’s my pick of the Green Earth News for this week. Good things are happening. Let’s focus on the positive.
#1 – New Mammal Species
The New York Times this week reported that this is the age of mammal discovery. Remarkably 400 new species of mammals have been discovered since 2005. And I thought that the world had been pretty much fully explored by now! What other treasures are awaiting us? I live in hope that discovery for these species will be something positive rather than a threat.
#2 – From Chickens to Diesel
Also from The New York Times, chicken feathers are being explored as a source of material for making bio-diesel. I think it beats feeding feather meal to animals. What do you say?
#3 – Wood Instead of Gas
I doubt there will be enough chicken feather meal to fuel our road transportation if we want to reduce our dependence on oil. Mother Nature News has a story on using gas from wood to power converted gasoline engines. The explanation is somewhat technical, but it certainly seems like it can work. What would it mean for forestry?
#4 – Green College Leaders
Mother Nature Network reports on the top colleges in America when it comes to green campuses. Washington State, Massachusetts, and Maine each have two colleges which made the green college honor roll, while Kansas doesn’t have any. Did your state make the grade?
#5 – Firefly Watch
What could be more fun on a summer evening than watching fireflies? How about contributing to scientific knowledge about them. You, and your kids, who are almost bound to be willing participants, can get involved in Firefly Watch from the Museum of Science. Fireflies are one of my absolute favorite things about the Kansas summer – every year I marvel at them. What about you?
Which green Earth news did you enjoy this week? What other news have you come across?
