The Kansas prairie is so hot, but the prairie flowers are so beautiful. It’s worth braving the scorching sun to see them. I took this series of photos on June, 28th 2009. How many of them do you recognize?

The first 6 photos – the top 2 rows – were taken in a place known to my family as Hill Field. Hill Field is a Kansas farm field which is being returned to native prairie.
The two bottom rows of photos were taken in The Meadow, a Kansas native prairie hay field – a field which has never been plowed.
Have you ever visited the Kansas prairie? Or the prairie in another state? Would you like to? Which flower do you like?

These are gorgeous!! I love the orange flowers in the second row from the bottom.
I am glad you enjoyed them Melissa. The orange flower is the classic butterfly weed, Asclepias tuberosa. It’s the one you most often see when people talk about growing milkweed for monarch butterflies. In fact there are many other milkweeds – less showy ones which the monarchs still love. There is at least one more pictured here.
Anyone recognize 2nd row middle flower?
