Today I figured out why I’m always seeing tomato supports on sale at garden places. My tomato plants are growing like crazy. On Monday I printed off a design for building my own tomato supports from wood, but four days later I’ve still not gathered the materials. I’d better get a move on – one of my tomato plants was bending over today and needed rescued!
This lovely cool weather with regular rain seems perfect for my tomato plants. I have tried growing tomato plants a few times before. Usually the weather turned really hot soon after I planted them and they stopped flowering. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a good harvest because I’ve not eaten tomatoes, other than canned ones, for a couple of months now and I’m really thirsting for them! I’ll keep you posted.
I don’t know what happened last week but one day I went out and found all my onion plants fallen over. It was a day when the soil was pretty dry – I don’t know if that is related or not. Anyway, green onions have been my best crop this year so far – it’s lovely to just nip outdoors and grab a few to add to a salad, soup, or stew.
I wish the lettuce could have done as well as the onions. After the very slow cold weather start, the lettuce became dinner for some creature in the garden – just as soon as there was enough for me to think about picking it. The mange tout plants were nibbled right off every time they began to grow too. I’m pretty sure I know the culprit and I’m planning my revenge! Well, I never do things to hurt cute creatures so the story won’t be PG13.
And I’m following a trail of clues to bring Melissa help on what she should grow in her Arizona garden. You just can’t rush these things to do them properly. What’s happening in your garden?
