Safe food and safe water are arguably our most precious resources. I don’t take them for granted. When a threat to our food and water safety comes around I need for someone to be paying attention, because I may not be. Consumers Union is one of the organizations who keep track of this kind of thing on behalf of us all.
Consumers Union
I’ve been a member of Consumers Union for a number of years, so I already knew something about what they do. I originally joined to get information before buying a car, washing machine, and tumble drier when I first moved to the USA. I’d not really thought about their role in protecting our food and water safety. Sure enough, if you visit their site you will find a wealth of information:
- Eco labeling – search for the meaning of different labels you might find on food, household cleaners, wood and paper, and personal hygiene products.
- Their Greener Choices page has information not only about food choices, but also about appliances, vehicles, electronics, home and garden, and how to recycle.
- I couldn’t find any reports about bottled water at the consumer reports site, after about 20 minutes of searching, so they must be well hidden. If you want to check into the BPA issue from plastic bottles and lined cans here is the page for that.
- Their food safety page covers issues such as contaminants, genetically engineered food, organic food, mad cow disease and pesticides.
Are you concerned about our food safety? What do you think is the most urgent problem?
