Roots & Shoots

Roots and Shoots is a youth program, founded by Dr Jane Goodall (of the chimpanzees), and designed to spread knowledge, compassion, and action in aid of people, animals, and the environment. That sounds like three things that interest me – nature, activities, and sustainability :-)

At the Roots and Shoots website you can:

  • Find an existing group near you. Wow! There are four groups in my area. Is there one near you? You don’t have to be a member of a group to get involved though.
  • Look for related events, like Be Kind to Animals Week. Oops, I missed it for this year. Not to worry, I try to be kind to animals every day :-)
  • Find Activity Guides. They have materials for ages 3-18 years and for both teachers and youth leaders. You do have to pay for the guides, but I imagine they are good quality. Priced at $9.99 – $14.95, if you’re looking for something like this to use with your kids do check them out.

What do you think about Roots & Shoots? Had you heard about it?

We started our own little tiny branch of Roots and Shoots (yup, pun intended) up here in rural MN last year. Mainly what we try to do is earth/environmental portion of R&S because some of the other goals of R&S are not as easily done here.

I loved reading the history of Roots and Shoots, it's so interesting! Jane Goodall is a hero for anyone.
