Everywhere I look I am seeing green. It’s the beauty of spring; I feel so fortunate to live on a lovely green spot on our beautiful Mother Earth. Let’s celebrate this week with some good news about the Earth.

#1 – The Greenest 100 Days – The Daily Green seems to approve of the steps taken by our new government administration. They have a 3 part post on positive things for the environment from the first 100 days in office. I’d certainly agree that there is lot happening. I signed up a month or so ago to receive press releases from the Department of the Environment. My e-mail box is filling up fast, so something must be going on!

#2 – 855 Bars of Chocolate – How much energy does an average American consume in one day? Apparently my carbon footprint is supposed to be the equivalent of 855 bars of chocolate. Showing the bars of chocolate on stage was a stunt used this week to promote “Ethical Man’s” journey across America. He’s been sent here by the BBC to investigate what we, American residents, think about global warming and our impact on the environment. I’d like to catch some of that on BBC America.

#3 – Unplugging – Apparently there are a few younger people who reject current technology and live happily without cell phones, mp3 players, internet, a microwave, iPods, a TV, and a car. Who’d have guessed it? Happiness without all that! Mmmm, come to think of it, at their age I did without all of those too. It’s certainly possible. What would you struggle to give up?

#4 – World’s Largest Solar Tower – You’ve got to look at the photo of the World’s Largest Solar Tower on Treehugger. From the air it really looks cool, or should I say HOT!

#5 – Afghanistan’s First National Park – The New York Times has the story on Afghanistan’s First National Park, home to wolves, wild sheep, and the Afghan snow finch Montifrigilla theresea, which is on the IUCN Red List. I couldn’t find a photo of the little guy, but apparently he’s a type of sparrow.

#6 – Coral Transplant Surgery in Japan – This project is really cool. Divers and scientists in Japan are transplanting small plugs of healthy coral into a dying coral reef off Okinawa, Japan. The project has been running for 4 years at a cost of $2 million. Wow – who says we don’t care about what is happening in the environment? The hope is that knowledge and techniques learned will allow repair of other damaged and endangered coral reefs.

#7 – Green With a Gun – The American military are adopting green energy strategies in the Mojave Desert. You can read about this at the Los Angeles Times. Apparently being green is saving them money.

#8 – Bright 100mpg Van – A company called Bright Automotive last week unveiled a van, aimed at the business fleet market, which gets 100 mpg. They plan to begin production in 2012. You can read the story at MSNBC. I’d love a vehicle which gets 100mpg. What about you?

#9 – Green But Not Elite – In Los Angeles a group started by Irma Munoz is bringing environmental awareness to Latinos. Good for you Irma!

#10 – A Spring Slideshow – Take a look at a slideshow of spring at The Daily Green. You can submit your own photos. I should do that! What do you think?

Really interesting post Alison. I’m about to buy a Toyota Prius, so I especially enjoyed the 100MPG van story.

MikeCJ – glad you liked the post. I think the Toyota Prius is a great car, especially for in-town trips. I can’t wait to hear about yours.

I’ve not figured the whole Twitter thing out. I’ll give it some thought and get back to you on that one!
