Garden Corner 4/23/09

It’s the perfect time to enjoy spring flowers in my Kansas garden corner. Today in the garden I found blue, pink, yellow and red flowers. Do you recognize any of them? Some came with the garden, others I planted, and there are a few invaders which nonetheless look pretty. The only problem is that I’m not used to the new wave of heat which arrived this week. I did some digging in the sun yesterday – it was pretty hot!

My poor spring greens are trying not to wilt under this 95F heat and I’m wondering whether the lettuce, which up to now remained tiny because of the cold weather, will ever get the right conditions. On the positive front, I’ve already enjoyed eating spring greens in both salad and stew. If this warm weather continues I’ll simply pick the spring greens, slice them, and freeze for later use.

Edible Landscaping – Kansas City
Yesterday I heard on the radio about the Edible Landscape exhibit at Powell Gardens in the Kansas City metro. It’s due to open this summer and it sounds wonderful! I think they said they have 40 varieties of apple trees and over 30 varieties of pears. I’ve a terrible memory for numbers though so don’t quote me! I was pretty excited to hear it’s going to be the largest edible landscape exhibit in the country. I hope I got that one right…

On the KCUR program talking were Rosalind Creasy who has written a whole series of books on Edible Landscaping and Alan Branhagen, from Powell Gardens. I’m going to have to find out more about this great project and write about it another time. Meantime, if you want to hear the radio program they have a podcast available. Now, if I just had endless time I’d pop on over there and listen once more :-)

How is your garden corner doing? Have you got signs of life, trees budding, birds nesting?

Allison I found you on the 31 day challenge site. Haven’t commented there because my blog startup is waiting for me to finish my thesis. Just wanted to let you know how much I’m enjoying reading your blog. Keep up the great work!

Hi Carole, thanks for reading :-)

Our Hosta is just now poking itself above the dirt line. A few trees are just starting to bud. I have yet to see a single tulip. Sigh. I’m experiencing climate-envy from reading all of the blog posts of people in warmer places.
But hey! We had our 1st 80 degree day yesterday–that’s promising, right?

Ruralmama, so glad you’re seeing signs of life :-)

The flowers are beautiful. Here in Arizona, the flowers on many varieties of cactus are blooming. Some are edible as well. :)
