My Kansas garden corner is waiting to receive a new resident. Have you planted anything in the last week? Pictured here is a wonderful rhubarb plant given to me by a great friend. I am blessed! I just need to go out and buy some composted manure to amend the soil before I plant it.
I think spring has finally hit my corner of Kansas and the redbud trees are turning pink. We’ve been longing for the warmth and sunshine! Yesterday was the most beautiful day, just perfect for being outside. This afternoon it is warm and sunny. My lettuce seedlings might finally start to grow – they’ve been in a time-warp for at least 4 weeks (stuck at about 1/2 inch tall).
I picked green garlic leaves and mint from the garden yesterday and put them in the bean stew we had for supper. Tonight I will pick spring greens to use in a stir-fry. When do you expect to harvest your first veggies? I’m really amazed at how well the Grow Guard “blanket” is working. I had a “duh” moment when I realized that if I’d put some over the lettuce I could likely be harvesting by now. Still, I’m rather conflicted over using polypropylene in the garden.
Did you plant anything this week? How is your garden growing?

I wish I had *anything?* planted. But alas! Not until the second week in May for us in the frigid north.
Starting some seeds soon….yippee!
Spring is here and the sun even came out today after several cloudy days. We got strawberries, potatoes, carrot and lettuce in the ground this week. I hope it grows good. this is our first year with the garden boxes.
Ruralmama, I’m wishing for spring for you. It will come, there’s no stopping it!
Tiffany, that all sounds good. Mmmm… strawberries… yumm! I just have a problem with fruit – I’m so impatient about waiting at least until year 2! Thanks for stopping by
We’ve started a square foot garden and it turned out to be a blessing already. It was easy to cover the strawberry and tomato plants when an unexpected frost hit Alabama in April (that’s suppose to be illegal
).
The flower garden HAS to have attention and I have about 1000 iris rhizomes to plant from digging and dividing last year. Fortunately I’ve got the kids on board – they get to sell extras and keep a portion of the income.
Kathryn,
I keep hearing about square foot gardening. I’ve read about a good number of gardening methods, but not this specific one, as far as I remember. I’m going to check further into it.
I know what you mean about making frosts illegal. I’m hoping we’re past the crazy period of weather Kansas has had this spring.
Great job on getting your kids involved!
