I was absolutely delighted to hear yesterday that the Obama family are digging up 1100 square feet of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden.
What a fantastic message this is sending to people around the country who might never otherwise consider getting involved in gardening and growing their own vegetables. What’s going to happen next? Will there be “a run” on seeds for the vegetables the Obamas have chosen? I’m glad I got my seed order in a few days back – I’d hate to be unable to grow my own greens!
Now, this wasn’t a spontaneous decision by the President and his family. For a whole year organizations and individuals have been writing, petitioning, and even driving across the country to try and persuade whoever the next President was going to be to grow veggies on the White House Lawn.
I am just pleased about the positive impact “green fingers” at the White House can have across America in encouraging folks to get out, dig, care about the source of their food, and give gardening a try.
What do you say?

I think this is fabulous! I recieved my degree in Agriculture and to see this (on the White House grounds) makes me really happy!
I read about this too and I thought it was great. I’m still trying to find a sunny spot . . . wonder if I could borrow part of their lawn? Might be a bit of a commute to do the weeding though.
I just heard about that yesterday and was so glad. I think it makes the first family more real. I heard once that a large lawn once signified something like “I’m so rich I don’t have to use all my grounds for grazing.”
What are they planning to do with all of their veggies though? Makes one wonder……..
