Spring Radish Seedlings
What’s happening in your garden corner? It’s been almost 2 weeks since I put in my first seeds. Right after planting the weather here turned cold, but we’ve now had a succession of warm days and I was hopeful I’d see something happening soon. I’ve been out every morning, watering can in hand, making sure the dirt stayed moist and checking to see if there was anything new going on.
Two days ago I was rewarded – the first seedlings showed their pretty little heads – frail and curly things tinged with red; radishes. Yesterday they were joined by even smaller, bright green lettuce sproutlings. I wonder what will be next – carrots, beans, peas, or onions. I’m going to guess onions, but I could be far wrong. It’s an exciting time as I anticipate the very first pickings of spring greens when I thin out the lettuce in a few weeks.
I finally put in my 2009 seed order yesterday. It’s only taken me about 3 months of contemplation to get there! I had plenty leftover seeds to use for early stuff, like lettuce and radishes, so I guess I didn’t feel a big hurry. I’m going to “live dangerously” and try more summer crops this year. Here are the things I’m most excited about trying, all from Territorial:
- Mini corn – CN206 – those little corn to use for oriental recipes which I can only buy here canned. I used to get them frozen in Scotland and I miss having them.
- Rhubarb – XR780 – I grew up on rhubarb and I’m excited to try growing it. My mouth is watering just thinking of rhubarb pie! Of course I’ll have to wait a least a year to get any rhubarb to eat.
- Lavender – HR1203 – I love the smell of lavender. I chose a variety which can be used in cooking or for making tea.
I got to wondering what is happening in other people’s garden corners around the globe. Here’s a small selection. If you have come across a great garden blog or post recently let me know.
- At Darla’s blog in Florida I did a double-take when I saw Yarrow in bloom. It won’t be flowering here until June and it’s not even showing green yet.
- Sue in Nebraska has a photo of lettuce seedlings up on her blog. They look a lot like mine. Maybe they are cousins
- Over in County Cork, Ireland vegetable beds are in preparation for organic plantings.
- Kris in NE Ohio, got a jumpstart on me by growing spring stuff early in the basement under lights. Her lettuce looks good enough to eat. I’ve tried the seed growing inside, but I just don’t have the patience for it. It’s the fresh air element of gardening that appeals to me.
- LindaB in Edinburgh, Scotland claims slow growing, but her pots of flowers are a total treat for the eye. Also in Scotland, at Shirls Gardenwatch, there are photos of banks of snowdrops which put my tiny patch to shame. Your kids might like to look at the 2008 footage inside a bird nestbox. Cool!
Wherever you live, whatever is happening in your garden, or whatever you are dreaming of when spring and summer come, I hope you are able to enjoy the change of seasons.

The flower seeds we planted indoors are sprouting. I’m afraid to put them outside yet. We’ve been known to have hard freezes in early April. Haven’t started the basil yet, but the mint shows no sign of returning yet.
