Are you looking for a more gentle way of gardening? A way which gets rid of the high maintenance lawn, and uses less chemicals and pesticides? Maybe you, or your kids, would like to go outside your door and pluck something juicy and sweet to eat right from a bush or tree. Now I’m assuming here that you have at least a light green thumb, that you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty.
I’m talking here about Food Forest Gardening or Edible Landscaping. They are two related things, but not quite the same. For more about Edible Landscaping take a look at Garden Girl on Lawns to Edible Landscapes.
Food Forest Gardening is more complex than Edible Landscaping. It’s based on the designs of nature, using plant guilds which balance each other. The Food Forest incorporates perennial plants, trees, and bushes which form a permanent part of the landscape. It also relies on natural recycling and on knowledge of insects and the role animals have to play in a garden ecosystem. The plants hold the soil in place, get rid of most of the need to till, dig, and weed, and provide food crops for your family year after year.

I am very intrigued with both of these. I will watch the video later – right now I don’t think I could take it in with Tom and Jerry in the background (BAD mommy).
Of course, we don’t actually have a lawn to begin with. We have lots of trees and wildflowers. And no sun. It’s a bit of a challenge.
