Many times I’ve found myself hampered – ha! ha! – by perfectionist tendencies. Sometimes change for the better seems so daunting that I give up in frustration and vow to make the change “some day”. I realize that this is not good enough. The time to act is now, even if I am just taking tiny, baby steps. With this in mind I have given myself a challenge to air dry laundry. Will you join me in the Green Laundry Challenge? Although the challenge I have chosen is to air dry laundry, if you want to give yourself a different laundry challenge for any reason I’m good with that! Please share
You can join me if you choose. There’s no need to beat yourself over the head if you can’t make 100% change right away. First you need a way to air dry laundry. If you don’t yet have that it will be your first step. I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure out several ways to do this. Don’t get lost in the details of what is the best way! If you’re someone who needs to ’strike while the iron is hot’ so to speak, just use whatever is already available to you. If you have a bath or a shower rail you can hang a little laundry on that. If you have something designed for clothes drying, of course that will be better, but you’re not going to get distracted! Are you?
What you are going to do is reward yourself for every positive step you take. No, you don’t really need chocolate! Take a small piece of paper and fix it to the wall either near your washing machine or beside the place you are going to air dry some laundry. Each time you fill the available space with laundry you’re going to make a tally mark. Make sure you fix a pencil nearby so that you can always keep track.
Now you are going to feel really good about every time you saved some electricity by air-drying that set of laundry. OK, you might not feel that great if you just have a tiny space, but you can feel good about the fact that even a tiny difference can be significant if lots of people make the change. A tiny step is the first step to making a big change. Go for it!
If you want you can come back here and report how many loads of laundry you have saved from the tumble drier. If you want to give yourself a different laundry challenge for any reason that is fine too. I’d love to hear about it – we can encourage each other.
