John Muir was born in 1838, in Dunbar, Scotland. The Story of My Boyhood and Youth was written by John in his old age and published only 21 months before his death, in 1913.

“When I was a boy in Scotland I was fond of everything that was wild, and all my life I’ve been growing fonder and fonder of wild places and wild creatures.”

“… after I was five or six years old I ran away to the sea-shore or fields almost every Saturday… though solemnly warned that I must play at home in the garden or back yard…”

“Father was proud of his garden and seemed always to be trying to make it as much like Eden as possible, and in a corner of it he gave each of us a little bit of ground for our very own…”
